The Awesome Corythosaurs
What animal has a duck bill, wears a Greek helmet, but lived in the late Cretaceous times? Need another clue? Its name starts with a "C" and ends with a "us". More clues? Some people think it has webbed feet, but it does not live near water. Another clue? It`s a dinosaur.
It is a Corythosaurus! (Cor -rith-o-saur-us)
Branum Brown named the Corythosaurus which means "helmet lizard" in Greek. The crest on its head looks like one of those Greek helmets. Corythosaurus' nose looks like a duck`s nose. Its eyes are close to its Greek helmet, which it used for trumpeting. Its neck is short, and it has a big hump on its back. It stood on all four legs, but walked on its hind legs which where long. Its arms were short, and it used them to pick up pinecones. The tail was large and was used for balance. The Corythosaurs was 21 feet tall which was twice as tall a house! The Corythosaurus weighed 5 tons which is more than three cars!
The Corythosaurus was found in Alberta, Canada, and there was a little skin left on the bones. The Corythosaurus ate leaves, pinecones, pine needles, and plants. According to Dinosaur (the website ), in late 1975 Peter Dodson studied many Corythosauruses and thinks that the size, wieght, and even bone structure depend on the gender. There have been over 25 skulls found, and each one has a tall, bony crest on top of his head. On its feet were deflated pads for walking. Some people thought they were webbed feet, but they were not webbed feet! Before 1975 people thought the Corythosaurus lived near water, but this is not true. They had feet that were like modern mammal feet.
Corythosaurus lived in the late Cretaceous times. They became extint when a meteor hit the earth 65 million years ago. The first Corythosaurus that was found is not around today in a museum because in 1916 it was transported to Britan but was sunk by the German surface raider SMS Moewe. Today it lays at the bottom of the North Alanltic Ocean . I picked the Corythosaurus becuase it is cool. And I like the bony crest .
